SHARE A MEMORY: MADRIDThis strategic design project explores the challenge of Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production within the specific context of Madrid. Focusing on tourism, a cornerstone of the city's economy, the research identified the souvenir industry as a critical area for intervention regarding consumption and production cycles. Initial research examined the volume and nature of souvenir production and consumption in Madrid, analyzing issues related to the commodification of local culture and linear, centralized production models. The project then investigated the potential for decentralized production, asking: Can tourists become both the producers and consumers of their own souvenirs?
Using qualitative research and strategic design tools, including future's thinking, we developed the core design challenge: How might we design an experience that incentivizes the exchange of narratives through the medium of collected items?
Revisiting the etymological root of 'souvenir', meaning 'remembrance', the project shifted its focus from material objects to the value of storytelling. Resulting in an infrastructural intervention that facilitates the exchange of personal travel narratives, independent of mass-produced goods. The final prototype was an interactive installation featuring a "Take one, Leave one" board, A simple system encouraging users to exchange their stories, leaving a personal narrative and taking that of a stranger.
